Background: LAP (TGF-beta 1)The TGF-beta family includes several related proteins (70 - 80% sequence homology) from mammalian, avain or Xenopussystems that are now designated TGF-beta 1, TGF-beta 2, TGF-beta 1.2, TGF-beta 3,TGF-beta 4 and TGF-beta 5. These proteins are secreted by cells in the form ofan inactive complex, referred to as latent TGF-beta, that consists ofTGF-beta associated non-covalently with LAP. These two proteins aresynthesized as a single pro-peptide that is cleaved in a post Golgicompartment prior to secretion. Different TGF-beta family members arenaturally associated with their own distinct LAPs.
Long Name:Latency-associated Peptide
Entrez Gene IDs:7040 (Human)
Alternate Names:CED; DPD1; LAP (TGFbeta 1); LAP (TGF-beta 1); LAP; TGFB; TGFB1; TGFbeta; transforming growth factor beta 1
