R&D Systems offers a human Galectin-3 Quantikine ELISA Kit (#DGAL30). Galectins are a family of carbohydrate-binding proteins with specificity for N-acetyl-lactosamine (LacNAc)-containing glycoproteins. Galectin-3 is widely expressed in various cell types including macrophages, activated T cells, osteoclasts, epithelial cells, tumor cells, and fibroblasts. With intracellular and extracellular binding partners, Galectin-3 can affect a wide variety of processes. Intracellularly, it can alter gene expression, inhibit apoptosis, and participate in exocytosis, endocytosis, and macrophage clearance of apoptotic cells. Extracellularly, it can regulate the innate immune response by binding to carbohydrates on specific pathogens and acting as an opsonin. Thehuman Galectin-3 Quantikine ELISA is designed to measure the levels of Galectin-3 in cell culture supernatants, serum, and plasma.

Assessment of Galectin-3 Levels in Cell Culture Supernatants using the Quantikine ELISA Kit. Human peripheral blood lymphocytes were cultured either unstimulated or stimulated with PHA for 1 or 6 days. Aliquots of the cell culture supernatants were assayed using the human Galectin-3 Quantikine ELISA Kit (#DGAL30).
