ST2 is a glycoprotein belonging to the IL-1 receptor family that is expressed on mast cells, activated Th2 cells, macrophages, and cardiac myocytes. IL-33 binds to ST2, inducing its association with IL-1 RAcP and promoting the upregulation of inflammatory cytokines in Th2 and mast cells. Elevated serum levels of soluble ST2 are associated with multiple aspects of heart failure and with inflammatory conditions such as allergic asthma, sepsis, and pulmonary disease. The human ST2/IL-1 R4 Quantikine ELISA is designed to measure the levels of ST2 in cell culture supernatants, serum, and plasma.
