Bioactive compound harboring antibacterial and antitumor activities Lavendamycin [CAS: 81645-09-2]
Date:July 29 2025Web Page No:520096
Lavendamycin is a bioactive compound harboring a quinoline quinone core similar to streptonigrin and was isolated from fermentation broth of Streptomyces.1) It was known that this compound had significant antimicrobial and antitumor activities. However, further development of lavendamycin as an anticancer agent was halted because of the poor aqueous solubility.2)
There were many papers reporting structure-activity relationship and it was recently reported that lavendamycin inhibited cell lines of T-cell acute lymphoid leukemia (T-ALL).5) Therefore, this compound has attracted attention in biological research field.

Application Note
- Survival rate of mice which inoculated with bleomycin sensitive cell line P-388-J was increased their survival rate up to 30% by administration of lavendamycin.1) (The blenomycin sensitive P-388-J was derived from mouse lymphoid tumor cell line P-388.)
- Although lavemdamycin inhibited growth of T-ALL cell line CCRF-CEM at the low concentration range (IC50: 0.02 μM), it did not growth of B-cell lymphoma cell line Raji.5)
- This compound had inhibitory activity of bacterial and fungal growth, but it especially showed strong growth inhibition to Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Microsporum canis.1)
■ Antibacterial activity of lavendamycin (from reference #1)
Bacterial species | MIC(μg/ml) |
---|---|
Trichophyton rubrum | 0.5 |
Trichophyton mentagrophytes | 0.5 |
Microsporum canis | 0.25 |
* Biological activity of the product was not verified. The values shown on the table were cited from the reference paper.
