Ice On is a sample tube cooler (rack), made of aluminium. Tube walls adhere tightly to rack, therefore tubes are more guickly cooled than when put onto ice directly. Moreover, tubes are maintained at low temperature.

To put a vial directly on ice
Even with fine crushed ice, air gaps are created between ice and tubes, resulting in low cooling efficiency for the sample.

To put a vial in Ice-On and set on ice
Since a tubing and a aluminum hole are in contact with each other without any gaps, if Ice-On touches ice, the tubing is in the same condition as if ice were in contact with all of its surfaces without any gaps.
