Futalosine is a natural nucleoside analogue which was isolated as a new compound from Streptomyces by Dr. Hosokawa in Institute of Microbial Chemistry (Bikaken) in 1999.¹⁾ Dr. Dairi in Toyama Prefectural University elucidated that futalosine was an intermediate of an alternative pathway in menaquinone (vitamin K₂) biosynthesis in in some bacteria including Streptomyces coelicolor, Helicobacter pylori, Campylobacter jejuni, and Thermus therophilus. This news menaquinone synthetic pathway was named as the futalosine pathway.²⁾ This compound is a useful tool for studies of the menaquinone synthetic pathway, or the futalosine pathway in pharmacological, medical, and biological studies.
