Lithium carbonate has been used for treatment of bipolar disorder.
However, Lithium carbonate is absorbed by a gastrointestinal and overdose of a lithium may occur nephropathy,serum lithium levels higher than 1.5 mM indicate a significant risk of intoxication.
Therefore, supervised administration of lithium carbonate is required and important.

Assay Principal

Lithium present in the serum sample gives a magenta colored complex with polyfluoroporphyrin (as chromogen). The color intensity is proportional to the amount of lithium present in thesample.
