R&D Systems offers Recombinant Human Galectin-9 (#2045-GA). Galectins are a family of multi-functional carbohydrate-binding proteins with specificity for N-acetyl-lactosamine-containing glycoproteins. They are involved in a variety of cellular functions, including adhesion, migration, polarity, proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. Galectin-9 directly interacts with the T cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-3 (TIM-3) protein. This interaction negatively regulates immune responses mediated by both Th1 and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, and promotes regulatory T cell differentiation. Alterations in Galectin-9-TIM-3 signaling have been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. In addition, Galectin-9 has been shown to function as an eosinophil chemoattractant, suppress tumor cell metastasis, and bind to carbohydrate moieties of IgE, preventing mast cell degranulation and asthmatic anaphylaxis reactions.

Galectin-9 Stimulates Agglutination of Human Red Blood Cells.
Trypsin-treated human red blood cells were incubated with the indicated concentrations of Recombinant Human Galectin-9 (#2045-GA) in a V-bottom microtiter plate. Following 30 minutes at room temperature, aliquots of the cells remaining in solution in each of the wells were transferred to a new plate and the optical densities were monitored at 620 nm.
