Physostigmine is a natural, reversible cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitor that inhibits both acetyl ChE and butyryl ChE (IC₅₀s = 28 and 16 nM, respectively). ChE inhibitors, including physostigmine, have potential value in ameliorating dementia associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
