Specificity/Sensitivity

Ferritin has two subunits, heart and liver, that are 21 and 19 kD respectively. There are 25 different isoforms of ferritin combining different combinations of the two. Spleen is one of these combinations. The native molecule is 420-450 kDa, depending on the isoform. On a very long SDS-PAGE gel it is possible to resolve the two subunits; otherwise only a band of ~20 kD is seen. There might also be a band around 25 kD which is a charge variant. Moreover, a dimer at 40 kD can sometimes be seen.

Background	This polyclonal reacts with ferritin isolated from human spleen. Ferritin is a main iron storage protein. The antibody may facilitate the analysis of ferritin in serum for an iron nutritional determination. Low values of iron are associated with iron deficiency, while high levels may indicate a malignant disease, tissue damage and other iron overload.
